De momento han sacado una versión alpha (es decir, aún en pruebas y con mucho trabajo por delante), después de nada menos que 9 años de desarrollo (es lo que tiene hacer las cosas por amor al arte), pero por la pinta que tiene y que puedes ver en este vídeo, bien merece la pena.

Puedes descargar la última versión desde aquí, o directamente añade este repositorio en Ubuntu, abriendo el terminal y escribiendo:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wfg/0ad
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install 0ad

Después podrás iniciar el juego escribiendo 0ad en la línea de comandos o buscándolo como 0 A. D. en el menú pricipal en la sección Juegos (o Games, como es mi caso)

I’m using WordPress’ default theme Twenty Ten in one of my blogs, but I added some small modifications to suit my needs. One day I saw in WordPress’ admin panel that there was an update for the default theme. What first caught my attention was this: why the hell is there not an option to turn off those fucking annoying notifications?

But then, some days later there was also an update for WordPress itself. So I had two things I could update: WordPress and its default theme Twenty Ten. You’d think that they are different updates and that obviously updating one won’t update the other. It makes sense: you may want to update WordPress code but not the theme. But I wouldn’t be writing this posts if things that make sense were for those dumb, stupid WordPress developers, right?

So when you update WordPress it also updates the default theme. And there is not an option to avoid this. You are not warned. Nothing. You have to also upgrade the fucking theme because the fucking developers decided so. Thank you brilliant minds.

Now, and this is the funny part, when you upgrade WordPress and its default theme… you don’t get an updated theme! That’s right, you still get a notification that an update for WordPress’ default theme is available. Amazing. How dumb can be that?

Thankfully I had a back up of the theme with my small modifications and could restore it, but I wonder how many users have been caught off guard thanks to those dumb developers.

Sí llegan: simplemente iban directos a la carpeta de spam, lo cual demuestra que el plug-in hace su trabajo (mejor que yo, por lo que se ve). Ahora lo que tengo que hacer es dejar de recibir notificaciones en el correo, que ya cansa tanto mensaje por los pingbacks recibidos y aprobados…

Lo del 10% es un dato arbitrario, pero lo cierto es que Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado da prolemas casi todos los días, y no me importa si es sólo el 10 o incluso el 1% del tiempo, para empezar porque pago por tener conexión el 100% del día. ¿Que soy muy exigente? Pués mira, sí. Es lo que tengo con el dinero que doy a otros, que exijo algo a cambio. Como poco, lo que me prometieron.

Por supuesto es imposible que un servicio de este tipo funcione al 100%, pero funciona mucho peor de lo que yo puedo tolerar. Para mí es como comprar un coche que funciona el 90% del día, y el otro 10% está parado o tengo que estar quitando y poniendo el motor (que es lo que tengo que hacer constantemente con el modem USB de los cojones). Y en el caso del coche, al menos podrás llevarlo al taller y arreglarlo o, en caso extremo, cambiarlo por otro, pero con Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado no puedes hacer eso: el servicio es el que es y punto. Y es una mierda.

Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado sin permanencia

Lo bueno es que tengo Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado sin permanencia, así que mañana mismo llamo a Telefónica, uy, a Movistar, y que vengan a ponerme el ADSL de siempre, que también tendrá sus problemas, pero ni de lejos los mismos. Y en cuanto me lo ponga, me paso por la tienda Vodafone a decirles por donde pueden meterse su querido Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado.

Y es una pena, porque cuando Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado funciona lo hace muy bien, y hasta es posible descargarte varias películas de Megaupload (de torrent, emule y similares olvídate), pero siempre y cuando lo hagas a las 4 de la mañana y al servicio le dé por funcionar. Y no, no se trata de problemas puntuales por saturación, simplemente a veces va y aveces no, y tienes que estar reconectándote constantemente a ver si finalmente tira…

Si necesitas internet móvil, entonces Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado puede se runa buena opción, pero como busques una alternativa al ADSL, me temo que Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado no está a la altura, por mucho que quieran vender la moto.

PD: Edito sólo para comentar que gracias a la puta mierda de Vodafone Internet Contigo Ilimitado he publicado dos veces esta entrada, ya que justo al publicarla se ha quedado colgada la conexión. ¡Qué ganas tengo de quitármelo de encima!

WordPress removes br tags, adds p tags everywhere

Dumb developers at WordPress may think we all are so dumb as they are, and so we can’t manage our own post code. They think they are smarter than you and they know better when and where to place code. because we are soooo dumb.

I just tried to add a fucking form to one of my posts, a very basic form with three fields and two buttons and no matter what I did the fucking WordPress editor added code everywhere: it added unwanted br tags just before any text field and, funny, two br tags I manually typed because I wanted one of the fields in another row, were always removed. Thank you so much dumb WordPress developers for your much appreciated help! I’m too dumb to know what I’m doing.

Plug-ins to stop or disable WordPress auto formatting

Of course I’m not the only dumb blogger that is suffering from these smart guys (well, yes, they are dumb, but since I’m way dumber that them that makes them smarter than me). You can find hundreds of blog and forum posts asking how to remove this much loved auto formatting feature, and all our smart WordPress developers do is… nothing. Just nothing. After all, they are too smart compared to us and if auto formatting is there it may be for a reason. Don’t bother them with your irrelevant problems.

So many have tried to find a solution and it comes in the form of plug-ins. Whatever WordPress developers don’t want or don’t know how to fix, they will ask you to install a plug-in. I f the plug-in doesn’t exist, write it yourself or wait. The problem is, the plug-ins I hve tried so far don’t work. While I can format the form almost to my liking, I can’t still get the code untouched. Something is added anywhere. Always.

If you want  to try for yourself maybe you are luckier than me and can get the desired effect, you have these options:

PS Disable Auto Formattin: “When editing it in the HTML mode, it stops unintended removal of br tag and p tag , either addition of p tag.”

Raw HTML: “In the end I decided to just go and write a plugin that would let me put any code or script (e.g. JavaScript) in my posts and display it to the visitor unmodified.”

Additionally you can just the code directly to your theme’s functinos.php file: Disable WordPress automatic formatting on posts using a shortcode.

Good luck with that. It worked… almost. WordPress still insisted in adding code no one aked for.

Disabling the visual editor won’t disable auto formatting

Turns out there is an option to disable the visual editor, and since you may think is this visual editor what is causing the formatting problems, you’d think that disabling it will solve the auto formatting problems. Well, not so. First, the option to disable the visual editor is hidden in your users profile options, as if they were ashamed of the monster they created. Why not add this option where it should be, in the Writing section under Settings? it is not something that will only affect some users… Then, if you finally disable it and you use the plain HTML post editor, some auto formatting will still be applied to your posts. How dumb can be that? You may be left trying to combine the HTML editor with one of the plug-ins just to see if you have more luck… I know I’ll try, and if I can come with a solution that really works, I’ll let you know (or you can point me to one solution in the comments if you know about one). Just to show you, with the visual editor disabled, I get this in my post, where 2 br tags have been added where only spaces should be, a p tag that is not closed has appeared (so much for stating that auto formatting is a way to force validating code in posts), the two br tags I placed to separate the last text and text field have disappeared, but one has then been added in a place that makes no sense:

So all I can say for now is: fuck you WordPress developers. I appreciate all the work that is behind this blog software, but I really, really hate when you think you know better than me how to do things. It’s one of the reasons I left Windows many years ago, and one of the reasons why I may leave Firefox. It is not that you don’t know this problem exists, or that no one is asking you to solve it once and for all. You just think it is not worth your time. Well, them, fuck you. I’m really, really sick of this auto formatting shit. And you don’t care about it at all. Never did and never will.

1.- Es relativamente corto. Conseguir un buen dominio de 3 ó 4 letras es practicamente misión imposible hoy día, pero un dominio corto tiene muchas ventajas: es más fácil recordarlo, más sencillo escribirlo, ocupa menos en sitios donde el espacio es esencia¡, como por ejemplo…

2.- Twitter. En sitios como éste cada carácter cuenta, y es por esto que servicios para acortar las direcciones están más de moda que nunca. Pero gracias a lo corto que es el dominio eugl.es (que también es mío), puedo prescindir de tales servicios y hacer los enlaces simplemente así: http://eugl.es/t/324, lo cual luego en el servidor de eugl.es se traduce, gracia a htaccess, en http://eugl.es/twitter.php?id=324. Gracias a esto, puedo meter en cada mensaje el título completo de cada noticia (que rara vez llega a 120 caracteres) y el enlace a la misma.

3.- Si importante, aunque no imprescindible, es que el dominio sea lo más corto posible, también lo es que sea fácil de recordar, o bien porque el dominio refleja a la perfección el contenido del sitio (por ejemplo, cazaypesca.com en una web de… caza y pesca, ventadecasas.com en una de… pués eso), o bien por por su sencillez. ¿De qué dirías tú que trata una web que se llama Digg o una que se llama Google si nunca antes has oído hablar de ellas? Está claro que en casos como estos el dominio no dice absolutamente nada, pero gracias a la popularidad que alcanzan ciertos sitios, sus nombres acaban siendo sinónimos de algo o, directamente, marcas que representan la identidad de la web. Lo cual, me lleva a la siguiente conclusión:

Lo importante no es el dominio, es el contenido

Así es. Da exactamente igual como se llame tu web. Si el nombre de dominio no tiene sentido o no refleja fidedignamente el contenido de la web, procura entonces que sea lo más corto posible. Pero nada más.

Los buscadores enviarán tráfico a una web en función de su contenido, de los enlaces que reciba desde otras webs y, por tanto, de su importancia en un tema dado… ¿Influye el nombre en las búsquedas? Parece evidente que sí, que contener las palabras clave en el nombre de dominio influye en las búsquedas, pero… ¿hasta qué punto? Pués poco, muy poco. La clave, amigo mío, es el contenido. No olvides que el título de tu web no tiene por qué conincidir con el dominio: éste puede ser racatala.net y el título “La cría del caracol”, y es por esto último por lo que los buscadores tendrán en cuenta la web.

Así que no te obsesiones con el nombre de dominio y céntrate en lo que los usuarios realmente quieren y que es por lo que te visitarán: el contenido. En cuanto al dominio, sigue estas reglas: que seá fácil de recordar (corto si es posible) y que refleje el tipo de contenido de la web. Y como es difícil conseguir ambas cosas al mismo tiempo, decídete por una de las dos. Mi consejo: que sea corto y fácil de recordar, aunque no signifique nada. Con el tiempo, a medida que tu web vaya siendo conocida, ya se irá, poco a poco, asociando el nombre de dominio al contenido de la web (es por eso que, por ejemplo, un dominio tan absurdo como google.com es hoy día sinónimo de buscador… y hasta se ha convertido en verbo). No me hagas caso a mí, házselo a los grandes: Google, Twitter, Digg, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay… ¿Quién hubiera dado un duro por esos nombres antes de que se hicieran famosos?

Mis motivos para elegir el dominio photup.net

1.- No significa nada. Si buscas en Google, verás que hay pocos resultados (1340 me salen a mí) y que quitando unos pocos, los que hay no tienen mucho sentido  o no son resultados en inglés, que es el idioma que tendrá la web alojada en photup.net. Así que es un término relativamente nuevo, muy raro, que me será relativamente fácil asociar con mi web.

2.- Es corto. No tan corto como eugl.es, pero sí lo suficiente (10 caracteres frente a los 7 de mi otro dominio). podía haber ahorrado un carácter más elegiendo una extensión más corta (.es sin ir más lejos), pero prefiero sacrificar ese carácter extra a porque .net refleja lo que será le web: una comunidad, una red.

3.- Es bisílabo, con lo que resulta mucho más fácil de pronunicar que si tuviera una sóla sílaba más.

4. Es un juego de palabras en inglés (que será el idioma de la web) que tiene mucho que ver con el contenido: irá de subir o votar (up, vote up) noticias relacionadas con fotografía (photography, photo). Es decir, un Digg pero de fotografía, y el dominio, creo, no podría ser más específico en tan pocos caracteres (porque podría haberlos más específicos, como votephotographynews.com, votephotonews.com, photolinks.com y un largo etcétera, pero o son extremadamente largos… o ya están cogidos, que es algo de lo que ya te aviso al comienzo: que es extremadamente difícil encontrar dominos cortos que aún estén libres).

Así que ya está hecho, ya tengo un dominio que sigue mis propias reglas (corto, fácil de recordar, único, refleja el contenido…) pero esto es sólo una pequeña parte del camino. Lo que queda por delante, el contenido, es mucho más importante, y de nada servirá tener el mejor nombre de dominio si no hay un contenido que lo respalde, que lo tengan en cuentan tanto usuarios como buscadores.

Ahí están casos como el de sex.com, que costando la millonada que ha costado es menos rentable que miles de webs relacionadas con el sexo con dominios muchísimos peores. Y es que en realidad, practicamente cualquier dominio es peor porque sex.com no podría ser ni más corto ni menos específico al mismo tiempo. ¿Y de qué le ha servido? De muy poco, la verdad.

GoDaddy, no es oro todo lo que reluce

GoDaddy tiene precios imbatibles. Y poco más. Para empezar, su página web está demasiado centrada en la venta, y resulta abusivo el modo en que constantemente tratan de venderte algo. Y como no se tenga experiencia o no se preste la suficiente atención, al final se puede acabar comprando cualquier cosa casi sin saberlo de la cantidad de opciones que ofrecen, una y otra vez, en cualquier proceso de compra o renovación. A veces, incluso, hay opciones que se seleccionan automaticamente, y si al confirmar un pedido uno no la deseleccionas (para lo cual primero hay que darse cuenta de que estaban seleccionadas, y no siempre es obvio), acabaremos irremediablemente pagando por ellas.

Y no sólo se centran excesivamente en tratar de venderte cualquier extra por inútil que sea, llegando a utilizar para ello técnicas intrusivas, abusivas y que incluso podrían rozar, en mi opinión, el intento de estafa, sino que esto provoca además que el servicio prestado, dejando a un lado la propia adquisición de productos, deje bastante que desear: lentitud, falta de claridad, poca usabilidad, inconsistencias… Es lo que ocurre cuando se le da prioridad a decenas de banners, botones y enlaces publicitarios. Y no hay quien se libre de ellos ni en los más profundo del panel de control.

Y del hosting de GoDaddy mejor ni hablo (esa es otra historia que dejo para más adelante), pero te puedes hacer una idea de lo que opino (GoDaddy sucks by the way).

El caso es que cansado como estoy ya de GoDaddy, de su bombardeo incesante de publicidad y de la complejidad (y lentitud) de navegar por sus páginas, he decidido llevarme a cualquier otra parte todo lo que tengo contratado con ellos. Y tras buscar y comparar durante días, me he decidido por Dinahosting.

Las ventajas de Dinahosting

De momento, poco puedo decir de Dinahosting porque todo lo que he hecho ha sido registrar un nuevo dominio para ponerles a prueba, pero el resultado no podría ser mejor: aceptan PayPal (indispensable para mí), la navegación por sus páginas es una delicia en comparación con GoDaddy (esto, la verdad, no tiene mucho mérito), su panel de control, en principio, es bastante amigable, no hay publicidad por ninguna parte… Vamos, so far so good.

Cuando pase un tiempo y tenga con ellos más productos, ya contaré qué tal me ha ido. De momento, muy mal tiene que ser para que no me merezca la pena el cambio…

He tardado varios días, pero el tiempo real que le he dedicado no ha sido más de media hora (el resto del tiempo lo he tenido que dedicar simplemente a otras cosas), y este ha sido el proceso:

1.- He elegido la temática, que no es otra que la de adelgazar y bajar peso, tema en el que me he tenido que volver un experto debido a mi propia situación personal. Es una temática bastante popular por lo que mueve bastante tráfico y dinero, y por tanto es válida para mis propósitos.

2.- He decidido no comprar un dominio para este nuevo blog y alojarlo en alguno de los que ya tengo. De este modo reduzco los costes al mínimo, y sólo si el blog funciona y comienza a recibir suficiente tráfico, y generar algo de dinero, compraré uno (es decir, que se debe pagar por sí mismo, si no no me interesa como proyecto). La dirección del blog será http://adelgazarybajarpeso.rojilla.com. No es lo más serio, pero recuerda: esto es, en su mayor parte, un experimento y un entretenimiento.

3.- He decidido utilizar WordPress, entre otras cosas por ser el gestor de blogs más popular y por tanto el que más apoyo tiene (lo que se traduce en mayor disponibilidad de plantillas, plug-ins, foros de ayuda, etc). Además es el que mejor  conozco y el que uso, por ejemplo, aquí.

4.- He descargado WordPress.

5.- Lo he subido al servidor (yo, que usuario de Ubuntu, uso gFTP como gestor… FTP).

6.- He creado una nueva tabla MySQL mediante el panel de control del hosting de GoDaddy (remember guys, GoDaddy sucks).

7. He seguido las instrucciones de instalación de WordPress y…

8.- Ya está: Adelgazar y Bajar Peso.

Claro, que de momento el blog está vacío… Habrá que configurar ciertas cosas y empezar a publicara rtículos, y a partir de ese momento será el día 1 del blog y comenzará su seguimiento desde este… ¿Cuán lejos llegará este recién nacido? La segunda parte, la de conseguir que el blog sea rentable, es la realmente importante, puesto que poner en marcha un blog es bastanta sencillo y cualquiera puede hacerlo en un día utilizando servicios gratruitos como Blogger o WordPress, o, si se quiere hacer algo más serio (o profesional) en un par de días registrando un dominio e instalando luego un gestor de blogs como WordPress (no confundir con el servicio hospedado mencionadoantes), y que además muchos proveedores de hosting lo ofrecen preinstalado con lo que todo se reduce a un par de clicks.

¿Para qué crear un blog?

En mi caso, estos son los motivos para crear un blog:

1.- Hay un tema que me interesa y del que me he estado informándome mucho ultimamente, y escribir un par de artículos diarios acerca de este tema me ayudará a mejorar mi comprensión del mismo y a retener mejor la información, al tiempo que pongo dicha información al alcance de otras personas que puedan estar también interesadas, con lo que tendrán otra fuente y podrán ahorrar tiempo en búsquedas.

2.- Me he dedicado a crear blogs y otros tipos de páginas durante los últimos 10 años, pero siempre ha sido para otras personas para las que trabajaba. De hecho, después de tantos años teniendo la creación de blogs como parte de mi trabajo, hasta hace un mes no tenía ni mi propio blog personal. Paradójico, ¿no? Ya se sabe: en casa de herrero, cuchillo de palo. Pués he decidio que ya es hora de que eso cambie, y no sólo estoy poniendo en marcha mi blog personal sino que quiero ahora tener también mi propio blog profesional, es decir, un blog comercial con un fin económico. De este modo puedo complementar  ambos blogs. uno, el personal, será abierto, libre, taratará de cualquier cosa que me apetezca y publicaré lo último que se me ocurra aunque sea una gran tontería, mientras que el nuevo, el profesional, deberá tener una temática muy concreta y una estrategia bien definida con la que imponerme a mí mismo una gran disciplina. Serán la cara y la cruz, y así podré dedicarle tiempo a uno u otro dependiendo del momento, de mi estado de ánimo o de las ideas que tenga.

3.- Como he estado tanto tiempo creando blogs para otros y ahora ya no lo hago, tengo miedo de ir perdiendo lo aprendido si no practico con algo. Y lo que es peor: en esto de Internet cada día hay que aprender algo nuevo, y si no hago nada me puedo quedar atrás rapidamente. Por eso, al crear un blog, y darle además un carácter comercial, serio, con fines concretos, tengo la herramienta perfecta para seguir practicando diseño, programación, gestión de dominios y hospedaje, técnicas de posicionameinto, etc.

Y luego se podría decir que también está el tema del dinero, pero sólo a medias: ganar dinero con un blog motiva y te ayuda a fijarte metas, pero si se convierte en el fin último del blog lo que podría ser una buena alternativa de ocio, un pasatiempos y un medio para el aprendizaje, acaba convirtiéndose en un verdadero trabajo, con lo que la ilusión acaba yéndose. Sacar unas perrillas será un aliciente, pero intentar sacar más sería mi perdición…

¿Cómo crear un blog?

Pués eso lo explicaré cuando llegue el momento. Ahora, lo que voy a exponer a continuación, es la táctica general:

- Voy a crear una lista de consejos para conseguir más visitas para el blog (los consejos serán míos o los iré sacando de por ahí), y voy a aplicarlos diariamente, comentado cuando proceda los resultados obtenidos para que así todos podamos ver si eran realmente buenos consejos.

- Voy a elegir una tématica concreta, que como ya dije en mi lista de motivos para crear un blog, ha de ser una que me guste (para no perder la ilusión), de la que entienda algo (para poder escribir buenos artículos) y que tenga mercado (porque hay temas muy interesantes, pero en los que no se mueve un duro, y en los que por tanto resulta realmente difícil generar algo de dinero).

- Voy a hacer en este blog un seguimiento del nuevo blog y cada vez que haga algo relevante lo contaré. Llevaré la cuenta de los días que transcurran desde hoy mismo (hoy será el día 1 del proyecto)

¡A crear el blog ya!

Lo dejo ya que cuanto antes me ponga manos a la obra antes podré poner en marcha esta iniciativa. Lo primero que voy a hacer una vez publique esta entrada, será decidir si uso un nuevo dominio o me conformo con un subdominio en este mismo (rojilla.com). Lo que tengo claro es que no usaré un servicio de blogs gratuito, sino que instalaré WordPress, más que nada porque así puedo tener todo el control sobre el blog. Y luego vendrá elegir la temática, el nombre del blog, las categorías…

That’s why I tend to upgrade only after some months (thanks to all those brave users that go ahead and have to deal with the plethora of bugs!). The problem is that in Ubuntu sometimes there is no easy way to upgrade single programs to take advantage of new features, and when there is something I really like, I feel ‘forced’ to upgrade the whole system way before I wish I had.

Upgrading to 10.04

This time I upgraded just a month after the launch of Lucid (10.04) and one of the things that made me took the plunge earlier was the system integration with social networks, like Twitter or Facebook. Well, no luck: Gwibber, the program that makes this possible, has bugs and doesn’t let me add accounts. Thank you Mark for releasing new great features… broken.

Another good reason was that I now have a 3G connection with Vodafone and wanted to connect without having to use Betavine‘s Vodafone Mobile Connect. Again, I have had lots of problems with Network Manager (I have had problems with this program since I started to use Ubuntu like 4 or 5 years ago) and when I decided it was not worth my time dealing with that program any more, I found that I couldn’t install Vodafone Mobile Client back! BTW, it was automatically removed when I did the upgrade to Lucid (see, that’s the kind of behavior I hate so much, like what Mozilla did with the link properties context menu option in Firefox 3.6). And while I can now finally conncet I still have some problems with the 3G modem, ozerocdoff and wvdial. Great.

Anyway, I have been able to sort all the serious problems (many more than what I have actually mentioned here, but I was just telling you my reasons to upgrade so ‘soon’), and I lost the count on all the hours I have spent in doing so. A shame considering that Lucid is a LTS version (what made me feel more confident about the upgrade BTW).

My Ubuntu One review

I like the idea behind Ubuntu One (just like I like Dropbox or similar services) and if I didn’t use it before was because, as you can see, I know how Canonical works and expected lots of bugs everywhere in the first months. Now that enough time has passed and we he a new LTS version here (which is a warranty of nothing as you can see), I decided to give it a try.

So I registered a new account at Ubuntu Single Sign On and followed every step after… I got an error: I went to a page named Confirm Computer Access and to to sync my computer all I had to do was to click a button labelled Add this computer, but it just took me to a Firefox error page saying

Unable to connect
Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at localhost:54034.

What is worse, there is no single mention of this problem in Ubuntu One’s FAQ so you are left wondering what could possibly go wrong. To add insult to injury, there is not a single link in the whole Ubuntu One’s web control panel to get to that Confirm Computer Access again. No one is perfect, the process failed, but… how can I go to that fucking page again? Are you telling me that I only had one chance to sync my computer? Of course there must be a way to try to sync the computer again, but where is it Ubuntu? The only way I found to get there is through the browser history.

A well known Ubuntu One bug

It turns out this is a well known bug and it’s been reported to Launchpad (here or here for example) as far back as… September of the last year! Amazing. That’s all I have to say because I just can’t believe they made nothing in almost a year to fix this bug.

And the whole Ubuntu One site is a mess: when you are in the ‘Subscription Details’ page you have a link to cancel your subscription and a link to view your account that when clicked takes you to the ‘Your Account’ page where you can do little more than editing your details (name, email and password) and click a link that says ‘View details or make changes’ which takes you to… the previous ‘Subscription Details’ page.

But wait, it can get even more stupid. There are three other links in the ‘Your account’ page:

- Ask account related questions. All it does is take you to a page where they say “Do you have billing questions regarding your Ubuntu One account?”. This makes clear that Ubuntu One is a desperate attempt by Mark Shuttleworth to make money (more about this in a moment).

- View the machines connected to this account. Of course this takes you to an empty page since the syncing process failed. That’s where you’d expect to find a “Sync computer” option to try again but all you’ll find is a link to the installation instructions, where they describe all the steps to create a new account at Ubuntu Single Sign On and sync the computer once signed in. What they don’t tell you is what to do in case the syncing process fails.

- Set up phone syncing (beta). This is the funniest because of the ‘beta’ warning. I don’t want to imagine how it works (and that’s why in fact I didn’t bothered to follow the link).

The only option left in the control panel is a check box to subscribe by email for Ubuntu One tips and updates. There is that check box… and nothing more. There is no button to confirm or save when you check it. Brilliant.

Yes, Ubuntu One is crap

When I can finally sync my computer to Ubuntu One (and I don’t know how can I do it, I venture another wasted night trying to figure it out) I’ll update this review. But I can actually tell you that even being able to sync my computer problems may still come, and just a fast Google search will show what I’m talking about (overuse of CPU, excise RAM usage…). One quote I liked:

File syncing is unreliable, evolution contacts syncing works on some machines but not others, System/Preferences UI is irritating (combining html with desktop app SUCKS), can’t delete directories from web site, no android app.

So from my own experience and the countless bad experiences of others, the conclusion of this Ubuntu One review can’t be other than: don’t waste your time with it. Ubuntu One is crap. Use Dropbox instead. Or anything else.

Ubuntu One should have never been released to the public. It is still in Beta, just like Ubuntu itself. Why they released it anyway is something I will talk about another day (don’t miss it: subscribe to my RSS feed or follow me at Twitter).

It’s not that the plug-in doesn’t work, it’s that it works most than it should: unless there is an option that I missed, it will update your Twitter not only when you publish a new post but every time you edit one too. Maybe some bloggers find this useful but I don’t: sometimes can be good reasons to  your followers ) but what if you just edit a post because you forgot a question mark or mistyped a name?

Wait, it gets worse.

Admiyn Twitter also updates on new comments

Another ‘feature’ of Admiyn Twitter is that it will also update your Twitter status whenever a new comment is added to any of your posts. First of all, I don’t see the need for this feature: really, what’s the point of updating on once and every new comment? This could be nice for a small site with almost no activity -and no followers- or as way to have you informed of new comments, but WordPress already does this, so…

But let’s imagine that you like this ‘feature’ . Again, the plug-in works  more than it should, updating your status on new comments… even if they are not published! That’s right: I received the usual SPAM comments and guess what? Admiyn Twitter updated my status for every new SPAM comment.

Be warned: as of version 1.2, avoid Admiyn Twitter! Unt

Of course, I appreciate the work of Anderson Makiyama and any other person involved in the development of the plug-in, but it has two major flaws that I thought were worth spreading.

Really, GoDaddy sucks

The hosting is slow, the custom control panel a mess, their home is anything but user-friendly and they are constantly trying to sell you something (not that other companies don’t do this, but the way GoDaddy do it is just too intrusive, spammy and borthering the scam).

So yes, GoDaddy sucks (see for yourself), and while I still have some business with them (like this site, but I’ll try to solve this ASAP) if I were you… I’d run away.

UPDATE: this is completely true! I’m writing this with WordPress and just when I clicked “Publish” to, err, publish this post… nothing happened! The page kept loading and loading after I got that annoying “You have chosen to open…” browser message that I get every time the server times out… And that’s like one time out of every ten. How good does that talk about GoDaddy’s hosting? Yes, Godaddy sucks.

I hate it when they change something like this and:

1. They don’t warm you (like “upgrading to 3.6 will disable this and that…”).
2. They don’t give you and easy alternative (like an option to revert the change).

And when I say they don’t warm you, I don’t mean a warming in some VSN or website or list that only experts or coders visit, like Bugzilla. I mean a straight warming for end users without technical background or the time to closely follow Firefox’s development.

I wish I could easily decide if an upgrade would be worth or set in the preferences a “no thanks, don’t touch this, I really like it”. But no, they just remove whatever they please and you are left wondering where the hell does that option that you love so much gone. Believe me: when one of this changes happens I sometimes think I’m drunk or need more sleep. Just like when they suddenly decided that it was better to open new tabs just after the tab you were in instead of opening them at the far right as it has been for years. After minutes of frustration and asking myself what could I have broken I realized the kind of people I was dealing with (like the lovely Nightingale) and headed to Google just to find that thousands and thousands of Firefox users were as upset as me. See for yourself: here, here or here. Great move Firefox team.

Fortunately someone took the time to write an extension that will fix link properties menu problem (and there is an easy fix for the tabs opening order as well). What the extension won’t fix is this kind of behavior at Mozilla though.

One day Chrome and Chromium will be the leading browsers and people at Firefox will wonder how it happened.
